In 2017, Wolfs Company received a Small Swift Grant under the BEST 2.0 Programme, funded by the European Commission, to implement the project “Capacity Building and Increased Financing for Long Term Monitoring Programmes for Coral Reefs in the Turks and Caicos Islands.”
This project supported the participation of staff from the Department of Environment and Coastal Resources (DECR) and members from civil society partner organizations in an Atlantic and Gulf Rapid Reef Assessment (AGRRA) coral reef monitoring course. The training involved scientific survey techniques and provided participants with knowledge to develop effective monitoring programs and improve communication for strengthening the management of coral reefs.
Furthermore, a review of revenue streams to finance monitoring programmes along with the outcomes from the training surveys of the AGRRA training course, were the basis for the selection of indicators for DECR to demonstrate the environmental “return on investment” in nature management. Finally, the project provided suggestions for the necessary steps to implement a long-term monitoring programme in the pilot site, the Princess Alexandra Land and Sea National Park, and scaling up long-term monitoring efforts in the TCI.
