Enhancing sustainable financing strategies for marine protected areas in Belize and Honduras

Project

The Toledo Institute for Development and Environment (TIDE) in Belize and the Roatan Marine Park (RMP) in Honduras are two of the organisations managing Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) in the Mesoamerican Reef (MAR) region. Wolfs Company conducted a two-phase project to assist these organizations in the identification and design of sustainable financing mechanisms to support their nature conservation activities in the long-term.

In Phase I of the project (2017), TIDE and RMP exchanged experiences during a workshop held in Belize and applied the Eco2Fin Sustainable Finance Framework developed by Wolfs Company to identify possible interventions for the improvement of their sustainable financing strategies. In Phase II (2018), Wolfs Company developed a tailored financial planning tool and trained TIDE and RMP in its usage to support MPA management.

This project was conducted in collaboration with the MPAConnect network, the capacity building partnership between the Gulf and Caribbean Fisheries Institute (GCFI) and NOAA’s Coral Reef Conservation Program (CRCP).
